Earthquake In New York City

**Major Earthquake Shakes New York City and New Jersey** A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the New York City and New Jersey region on Friday morning at approximately 10:20 AM. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Readington Township, New Jersey, approximately 40 miles west of New York City. The earthquake was felt in buildings across New York City, sending smaller shakes as far as Long Island. An estimated 47-magnitude aftershock shook parts of New Jersey later in the morning. In the evening, an additional 4.0 magnitude aftershock occurred in the same area. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is monitoring the situation and no major damage or injuries have been reported so far. According to the USGS, the earthquake was part of a sequence of seismic activity that has been ongoing in the region for several months. While earthquakes are a relatively common occurrence in the Northeast, events of this magnitude are less frequent. Residents in affected areas should remain alert for any aftershocks and follow safety guidelines from local authorities. The USGS recommends dropping to the ground, taking cover under a sturdy table or desk, and holding on until the shaking stops.
